Who doesn't like to save money?
Getting cheap car insurance rates doesn't have to be hard or time-consuming. You can make a few changes and easily save. It might be just a few bucks a month -- or hundreds of dollars (or more) a year. But you won't find out until you try.
Here are three simple ways to save on auto insurance.
Shop around. You may have heard it a million times: Look to see what rates other car insurance companies are offering.
But have you done it? You can call several agents, or you can visit several carrier websites to get quotes.
You also can easily get multiple quotes from nationally known auto insurance providers after filling out one form that takes less than 15 minutes to complete. You can compare without going to multiple sites and will know right away if you are paying too much with your current auto insurer.
Inquire about discounts. As the saying goes, there's no harm in asking. In this case, it's for additional discounts you may not be receiving.
Certain car insurance discounts may be offered because of the information you give as you fill out an auto insurance quoting form (such as, multi-vehicle, anti-theft, safety features and good driver discounts), but other discounts that aren't as common may require you to ask a question or two.
Less common discounts include alternative fuel discount, going green discount, transfer discount and discounts for the type of degree or occupation you hold. There are also discounts available for being affiliated with certain companies or organizations -- and this varies greatly from one insurer to another.
Contacting your insurer for a list of possible discounts will take just a few minutes and could lead to a big reduction in premiums if you're eligible for extra discounts.
Try out telematics. Several car insurance companies now offer what is referred to as pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) or usage based insurance (UBI) programs. To receive a discount on your total auto insurance premiums, the insurer will monitor your driving behavior through a telematics device.
Driving very few miles during the safest parts of the day will help you earn a discount.
How fast you drive and how often you use the brakes may also be measured by the insurance company to determine your PAYD discount. The discount may not be as high as you hope if you're an aggressive driver. However, auto insurance companies thus far say the telematics data received won't be used to charge you higher rates, only to offer you a discount.
